VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It allows you to route your internet through another computer, in another country.

Many popular sites and services will not work in China for various reasons, these include: Gmail, all other Google services, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook. You will need to purchase and use a VPN on any device connected to the internet in order for you to access these sites and services. Most VPNs have an app for use on mobile devices and tablets. Try to avoid using free VPNs, as they can prove a security risk.

Recommended VPNs:

  1. Express VPN
  2. Vypr VPN

Teacher Tip. It is not illegal to use a VPN in China, as long as the computer server you are connecting to does not reside in mainland China. It is illegal and against school rules to download, distribute or stream copyrighted material and use bit torrent P2P software to facilitate it.
